Sowing the seeds of Love

My Mom had this custom window made with the quote, “Sowing the seeds of Love.” For many years she had this by her nightstand and at one point it was on the front porch to share the message with those who came into her home or dropped off a package. While I always enjoyed the window I hadn’t spent too much time really pondering it’s importance and why this message was one my Mom felt inspired to have custom printed onto the window. After my Mom passed away I asked my Dad if I could have the window and he brought it out to me during his last visit. Since that time, the window has hung in my home office and I read the quote daily and think about its meaning. Here is what I have gleaned…

Sowing is to plant seed for growth or to set something in motion. One of the synonyms is “to instill”. My Mom was actively planting the seeds of love into all of her relationships – she was always supportive, encouraging, and willing to listen and offer advice when asked. She sought out meaningful relationships with her spouse, children and grandchild and was quick to welcome new friends or family members into her life. I’ve come to understand that what we sow is what we reap – reaping is to gather or harvest. So, by sowing the seeds of love we then reap the rewards of what we have planted and invested our time, energy, and compassion into.

With my Mom having sowed the seeds of love into our relationship I feel peace, joy, and harmony when I think of her and all of the special times we have shared together. I can fill my heart with gratitude to know that she is still growing, expressing, and demonstrating that love in Spirit. By giving me this gift of love, I am also sowing the seeds of love in my relationships and seeing that love grow and be expressed in my own daughter. My hope is that we can all plant more seeds of love, support, and encouragement into the world and then everyone can reap and harvest the rewards.

Speak gently, it is better far
To rule by love than fear;
Speak gently, let no harsh word mar
The good we may do here.

Speak gently to the erring ones,
They must have toiled in vain;
Perchance unkindness made them so;
O win them back again.

Speak gently, ’tis a little thing,
Dropped in the heart’s deep well;
The good, the joy that it may bring,
Eternity shall tell.

Hymn 316 – Christian Science Hymnal

I was born and raised as a farm girl in the Midwest and have spent the past 20 years living in Australia, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest working as a marine mammal biologist. I love spending time with family, gardening, being outside, and I enjoy making delicious meals for my friends and family. My beloved mama, Kelly passed away in late 2020 and this website is dedicated to her - she taught me to be a grateful heart and see the beauty that surrounds me in all that I do.
