Living Lessons: Mother’s Day 2021

This morning after a long walk thinking about and celebrating my Mom a neighbor offered to let me cut some of her gorgeous purple lilacs. I eagerly accepted her offer and thanked her for her generosity and kindness. As a child my Mom would ask me to go outside and cut fresh purple lilacs for the farm dining room table and the scent of lilacs brings me back to that time in my life. I recently learned that purple lilacs represent spirituality – this one word, spirituality, summarizes my Mom and her dedication to knowing and understanding who she is (and who each one of us are) as the beloved child of God, Love. As spiritual ideas, our life is not contained in matter or in body, our life and expression is constant and eternal.

There are so many things that my Mom and I enjoy; time with family, flowers, time spent outside in the garden, long walks in nature, spiritual study and growth, sunbathing by the pool, but above all; we love and care for each other deeply. One thing my Mom did was to make me feel like the most precious, loved, and cherished daughter that ever was – she accomplished her goal.

I am opening my heart to share with you one of my most prized possessions, this handwritten note from my Mom. I read this note every morning – it’s a reminder of who I am – a beloved daughter who is cherished and deeply loved. This note gives me the strength to move forward, the kindness to speak gently, the love to keep on giving, compassion for others, the generosity to know that my source is unlimited, and the beauty to shine the light I have within myself. I am a grateful heart.

I was born and raised as a farm girl in the Midwest and have spent the past 20 years living in Australia, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest working as a marine mammal biologist. I love spending time with family, gardening, being outside, and I enjoy making delicious meals for my friends and family. My beloved mama, Kelly passed away in late 2020 and this website is dedicated to her - she taught me to be a grateful heart and see the beauty that surrounds me in all that I do.

Thanks so much for your lovely post and for sharing your Mom’s note etc. Your mom was so special and so missed but she is going on her journey. You are so special to share these things. Love the lilacs. Ours froze again so wasn’t able to pick a bouquet. Thanks for sharing. Love to you.
