DIY Bonfire Pit

We transformed an overgrown section of forest into a special bonfire area for our family and found it was the perfect place to hangout with friends mid-pandemic. This is a super easy project that we did in a day for very little cost – you can follow the easy steps below to make one for your space.

Supplies:

  • 36 concrete pavers (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pavestone-8-27-in-L-x-5-51-in-W-x-2-36-in-H-Heritage-Plaza-Rectangle-Buff-Concrete-Paver-300-Pieces-94-8-sq-ft-Pallet-60667/310128176)
  • Weed mat (optional)
  • Mulch (optional)
  • Small rocks
  • Medium rocks (optional, we used these: https://www.homedepot.com/p/MSI-Grey-Island-Beach-0-4-cu-ft-1-2-in-Bagged-Landscape-Rock-30-lb-bag-LHDPEBQGREISL30/311710886)

Step One: Locate a level area to place your bonfire. Clear all of the ground cover from the area – or you can just place a weed mat over the ground to smother it.

Step Two: Lay 12 of your concrete pavers in a circle on the ground (or on top of the weed mat) in the location you selected. You want to put the narrow part of the paver towards the inside of the circle and the widest portion on the outside. This is the base of the bonfire pit. Then use another 12 pavers for the second tier and then the final 12 pavers to create the third tier that will be the top.

Step Three: Put some small rocks into the bottom of the bonfire pit. I like a rock bottom so fire is not in direct contact with the ground or weed mat. This can be gravel or you can purchase a bag or two of rocks from your local home supply store.

Step Four: If you’d like, you can add some nice decorative rocks around the base of the bonfire. This is also an additional barrier between your bonfire pit and the mulch.

Step Five: Spread the mulch around the bonfire pit area – this is a nice ground cover to place chairs on and helps define the space. We recently expanded our space to cover an area of ~ 15 ft. x 20 ft. and used 2 yards of mulch ($70). You can used bagged mulch as well if you have a small space to cover.

Step Six: Enjoy!

I was born and raised as a farm girl in the Midwest and have spent the past 20 years living in Australia, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest working as a marine mammal biologist. I love spending time with family, gardening, being outside, and I enjoy making delicious meals for my friends and family. My beloved mama, Kelly passed away in late 2020 and this website is dedicated to her - she taught me to be a grateful heart and see the beauty that surrounds me in all that I do.
