Mom’s Cinnamon Rolls

My Mom and her college roommate at Iowa State University would make these cinnamon rolls in their dorm room. She made these cinnamon rolls on Saturday or Sunday morning when I was a child and now we do the same in our home. It’s a simple recipe that’s easy to make with very few ingredients and I know you’ll enjoy them as much as we do! Serves 4.

Supplies: Pie pan, one plate, two bowls, measuring cups and spoons.

Ingredients:

  • Two cans of pre-made biscuits – 16 biscuits in total
  • 1/3 cup cinnamon sugar
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons half and half

Step One: Preheat your oven to 400.

Step Two: Roll your biscuits into circles and place them on a plate. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a bowl in the microwave and put 1/3 cup of cinnamon sugar in a separate bowl. You should have your cinnamon rolls on the plate on your far left, butter in the middle, and bowl of cinnamon sugar on the right.

Step Three: Put one biscuit in the butter and then roll it in cinnamon sugar and place it in the greased pie pan. Do this for each biscuit until you’ve done them all.

Step Four: Put the cinnamon rolls in the oven for 15-20 minutes. While your cinnamon rolls are baking you can make the homemade frosting!

Step Five: To make the frosting use the remaining butter (there should be ~ 3 teaspoons of butter left in your bowl) and add in the powdered sugar, vanilla, and half and half and mix. If you’d like a lighter more drizzled frosting use 1/4 cup of powdered sugar. Mix and set aside.

Step Six: When the cinnamon rolls are done pour the frosting over the top. Let cool for 5 minutes then enjoy!

I was born and raised as a farm girl in the Midwest and have spent the past 20 years living in Australia, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest working as a marine mammal biologist. I love spending time with family, gardening, being outside, and I enjoy making delicious meals for my friends and family. My beloved mama, Kelly passed away in late 2020 and this website is dedicated to her - she taught me to be a grateful heart and see the beauty that surrounds me in all that I do.
