Kitchen Renovation

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and enjoy hosting our friends and family. Our goal was to open up the space, create a breakfast bar, and freshen up the cabinets to match our style. The first and biggest step was to remove half of a wall to open up the space to our dining and front living room area (featured in a separate post) – this wasn’t an easy task but it transformed our entire downstairs and was well worth the effort.

We installed Bruce Hydropel hardwood throughout the house for consistency and flow. We were able to use these floors in the kitchen and bathrooms since they are waterproof for up to 36 hours (which has come in handy a couple of times)!

The kitchen cabinets were sanded down and the color was paint matched to a china hutch in our dining room. We used Behr interior/exterior urethane alkyd semi-glass enamel for the cabinets and it did the job perfectly. This paint is very forgiving and I’d highly recommend it. It is labor intensive to hand paint kitchen cabinets but they look brand new and gorgeous – painting the existing cabinets were a huge savings!

The longest wait was for our new countertops – it took 5 weeks from when we picked them out to install and we chose quartz for it’s durability. We installed new GE appliances and an LG fridge. The backsplash is a white hexagon tile purchased from Home Depot and we also upgraded the lighting to LED’s for a nice bright white light for working in the kitchen.

This kitchen is where my Mom & daughter made strawberry jam this past summer (stay tuned for that recipe after my strawberry harvest) and it’s a memory I will cherish forever. I look forward to making many more memories in the years to come.

I was born and raised as a farm girl in the Midwest and have spent the past 20 years living in Australia, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest working as a marine mammal biologist. I love spending time with family, gardening, being outside, and I enjoy making delicious meals for my friends and family. My beloved mama, Kelly passed away in late 2020 and this website is dedicated to her - she taught me to be a grateful heart and see the beauty that surrounds me in all that I do.
