How to make Milky Way Cake

This Milky Way cake recipe is the go to birthday cake for my husband, Casey. He has been having this cake since he was a child to celebrate his trip around the sun day. A big thank you to my mother in law, Renee, for sharing this family recipe so I can continue to make this cake for his special day. This cake is surprising light and not as sweet as you may think – I highly recommend you give it a try! This serves 16+ slices depending on the size of the slice.

Cake Ingredients:

  • 6 full size Milky Way bars or 13 fun sized bars
  • 1 cup of butter, melted
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Frosting Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 3 tablespoons milk (or cream works well too)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Step One: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Step Two: Melt the Milky Way bars and 1/2 cup of butter on low heat or in the microwave. Set aside.

Step Three: Beat the remaining 1/2 cup of melted butter and the sugar in a medium size bowl until fluffy. You can do this in your Kitchen Aid mixer or with a hand mixer.

Step Four: Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well. Add the flour and the baking soda alternately with the buttermilk. Stir until smooth.

Step Five: Add the melted candy and butter and mix well. Stir in the vanilla.

Step Six: Pour the batter into a greased and floured (Baker’s Joy works very well) bundt pan.

Step Seven: Bake for ~ 1 hour or until the top springs back when lightly touched. The top will be quite brown and that’s okay.

Step Eight: Cool in the pan on a wire rack. Remove from the pan and let cool completely. While the cake is cooling make the frosting.

Step Nine: To make the frosting melt the unsweetened chocolate with 1/4 cup butter in the microwave in 30 second intervals. Add the milk, powdered sugar, salt and vanilla. Beat until creamy.

Step Ten: Once the cake is completely cooled frost the cake.

Enjoy & celebrate!
