Amazingly Simple Apple Butter
My husband absolutely loves apple butter so for the past two years I have been perfecting this recipe. This year I made my apple butter in a crockpot which made this process so much easier – no more simmering on the stove for 6+ hours! This recipe yields ~4 cups of apple butter and can be canned and put in the fridge for ~1 month.
Ingredients:
- 8 cups of peeled, cored, and sliced apples
- 1/2 cup of brown sugar
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Step One: Prepare your apples – first peel, then core, and then slice. Place the apple slices into the crockpot.
Step Two: In a bowl add the brown sugar, sugar, salt, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Mix together.
Step Three: Pour the sugar mixture over the apples, stir well until all of the apples are covered.
Step Four: Turn on the crockpot on low for 10 hours. Hint: Don’t worry if time is up in the middle of the night – just leave the mixture in the crockpot until morning.
Step Five: Add vanilla and continue on low for 2 more hours.
Step Six: Using an immersion blender blend the apple mixture until smooth. Put the apple butter into cans or an airtight container.
Step Seven: Enjoy on a slice of toast, in your morning oatmeal, or on meat dishes.
