Farm Fresh to Favorite Recipes: Apples
As a child my family and I would go to Wilson’s Apple Orchard & Farm in Solon, Iowa to pick apples in the fall. This year I had the opportunity to go when I had a last minute trip to take care of a family member. I enjoyed visiting the orchard again and seeing how the farm has evolved over the past 20+ years. The Farm Visit: The apple orchard was established in 1980 and was opened to the public in 1985 with over 100 varieties of apples in the orchard. I remember taking a wagon ride out into the orchard with my family to pick apples when I was…

Farm Fresh to Favorite Recipes: Cherries
My family has been going to Door County, Wisconsin since my Dad was a teenager (late 1960’s) and we enjoyed visiting my grandparents cabin right on the water every summer until it was sold 50+ years later. This is where my Mom asked us to spread her ashes, Pebble Beach will always be a place we cherish. This past…

Farm Fresh to Favorite Recipes: Strawberries
Suyematsu strawberries are a sought after crop on Bainbridge Island. With a limited supply this year I consider myself lucky to have gotten a box to make my homemade strawberry jam! The Farm Visit: Bainbridge Island Farms, also known as Suyematsu Farm is one of the oldest, largest, and continually operated farms in our county with over 100,000 pounds of produce grown each year. We’ve been going to this farm for a few years now to purchase strawberries, pick raspberries, and purchase other produce. Buying Strawberries: There is no u-pick option for strawberries at the farm so you need to pay close attention when flats are for sale. This information…

Farm Fresh to Favorite Recipes: Loganberries
This is only my second post in this category but I look forward to writing them and sharing my farm adventures with all of you. In mid-July my husband and I took a date day trip to a nearby farm to do some berry picking on the Olympic Peninsula. They offer strawberries, raspberries, loganberries, blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries and lavender. The Farm Visit: Graysmarsh Farm is located in Sequim, WA and is a locally owned and operated farm that grows berries, lavender, and has started producing honey and essential oils. They pride themselves on establishing a connection with every customer and hand packaging all of their products that are shipped out…

Farm Fresh to Favorite Recipes: Raspberries
This is the first post in a brand new series on the Grateful Heart Home & Garden website. I’ll be featuring farms that I visit throughout the summer and then share the recipe (or recipes) I make from my farm fresh finds. In essence, the farm to table concept! So come along with me on my journey to the farm, into the kitchen, and finally onto the table to enjoy with family & friends. The Farm Visit: Bainbridge Island Farms, also known as Suyematsu Farm is one of the oldest, largest, and continually operated farms in our county with over 100,000 pounds of produce grown each year. We’ve been going…
