Cutting Flower Garden Plans: 2023

I am thrilled to share that I will be planting my cut garden with Floret seeds this year. Floret is local to where I live and has been a huge source of inspiration and knowledge for me throughout this journey. I have many different varieties I am going to be planting this season and I absolutely can’t wait to get into the garden. To accommodate my seed buying & flower growing obsession I am adding three new raised beds this year! Here is the line up…

Amaranth ‘Green Tails’– I love the long green tassels this adds to my bouquets and this will be my first time trying to grow Amaranth.

Apple of Peru – This is used as a filler (something I didn’t plant enough of in 2022) so this will be fun to try! Stems are loaded with glowing green lanterns that appear after their periwinkle blossoms drop. Each plant produces buckets of bouquet material from mid-summer to fall – yes please!

Cosmos ‘Purity’, and ‘Seashells Mix’ – Floret claims this is one of the easiest and most productive cut flowers per square foot you can grow. Since I grow in such a small space (just six 4×8 beds) I need this!

Dahlia ‘Bee’s Choice Mix’ – I love that this includes a variety of seeds that will produce a wide range of shapes, sizes and colors. I have never started a dahlia from seed, only from a tuber. I’ll also be planting 50+ dahlia tubers this year that I harvested from the garden in Fall 2022. I’m going to run out of space!

Phlox ‘Whipped Cream’ – This flower has tall stems with milk white flowers and is fragrant.

Poppy ‘Frosted Salmon’, ‘Thai Silk Apricot Chiffon’ and ‘Supreme’ – I love how delicate poppies are and it will be fun to try out three different varieties in the garden. These are flowers that pollinators love and they are said to bloom all summer long.

Snapdragon ‘Sherbert Toned Chantilly Mix’ – This mix is a blend of soft warm colors including light pink, coral, salmon, and apricot.

Sweet Pea ‘White Frills’ and ‘Dancing Queen’ – I am really excited to try my first sweet peas and will need to get these started first as they are planted right around the last frost. I’ll be getting them into planting trays this weekend (February 18th)!

Zinnia ‘Lilliput Salmon’ – This one is an easy to grow flower for beginners and is considered a “cut and come again” flower which means the more you harvest the more they bloom!

While it is going to be many months before you get to see bouquets made with these flowers it’s still fun to share this part of the planning process with you! To beautiful and bountiful blooms in 2023!

Cutting Flower Garden Plans – Extended

I couldn’t resist some cut flower varieties I saw in the Territorial Seed Company catalog. I added 6 varieties to add to the garden for 2023…

Cosmos ‘Apricotta’ and ‘Cupcakes Mix’ – These two varieties include a nice range of colors including apricot, white, pink, rose, and hot pink. The Cupcakes Mix features flowers that have semi-double blooms with fused outer petals that give the flower the appearance of a cupcake wrapper.

‘Love-In-A-Puff’ – This is a 6-10′ vine that creates an abundance of blooms and air filled balloon seed pods and is many times used as a filler or movement flower in arrangements.

Potomac ‘Appleblossom’ – This is a new to me variety and I am very curious to see how this one works out. It features extended bloom time with tapered spikes of bicolor white and pink blooms. This looks similar to snapdragons in my opinion.

Tattoo Tangerine – This is another new to me variety that has super saturated salmon and burgundy blooms.

Zinnia ‘Oklahoma Mix’ – This claims to have a longer than usual vase life than other zinnias and 2 1/2″ blooms in a variety of colors including yellow, pink, scarlet, salmon, and white.

Cutting Flower Garden Plans – Round Three

Celosia ‘Flamingo’ – Celosia has soft flower spikes that are pinkish-white fading to silver at the base of the flower and turn a rosy-pink at the tip. These bloom from summer to the first Fall frost.

Gomphrena ‘QIS Fiery Sunrise Blend’ – This variety features bold, bright colors with papery flowerhead and last up to 2 weeks in the vase. They are also a more you cut the more they bloom flower.

Pansy ‘Swiss Giant Mixture’ – These bushy plants produce showy large velvety flowers in a wide range of colorful shades and are ideal for cut flower arrangements. They will produce flowers in 12-16 weeks if started indoors – I am excited to try these!

Snapdragon ‘Deluxe Mixture’ – This claims to be an easy to grow variety and produces colorful, long-spiked flowers. This variety includes creamy white, yellow, pink, orange, red, and crimson.

Sweet Peas ‘Royal Wedding’ – These sweet peas are very fragrant with softly ruffled snow-white blossoms on long stems. This variety is imported from England and has a fragrance of jasmine and orange blossoms.

Viola ‘Johnny-Jump-Up’ – Floret has inspired me to try violas after watching one of their mini-series videos. The flowers blend together violet, lavender, yellow, and some white in each face.

Cutting Flower Garden Plans – Round Four

I may or may not have a seed buying addiction 😉 I promise this is my last round since I don’t have any more garden space to plant anything else! All of these varieties are from Floret.

Bells of Ireland – I love the look of the green spires in this variety and Floret says this should be a cutting garden staple. It sounds a little tricky to germinate and grow but I’ll give it a try!

Globe Amaranth ‘Pastel Mix‘ – Button like blossoms resemble colored clovers in white, rose, soft pink, and pale lilac and the more you cut it the more in blooms.

Love-In-A-Mist ‘Albion Green Pod’ – This is a hardy early bloomer in the garden and has star shaped flower framed by a delicate halo of fringed foliage. This variety is not started indoors, but sown directly into the garden once we have our last frost (typically around April 7th in my zone).

Marigold ‘Starfire Mix’ – Each plant produces 15-20 branching stems of miniature-flowered marigolds in red, orange, and gold. I am really looking forward to trying this!

Ornamental Grass ‘Bunny Tails’ – I mean, who can resist a grass called bunny tails? These compact plants produce a gray-green blade with elongated heads that turn a delicate cream color as they age.

Pincushion Flower ‘Snow Maiden’ – I have light purple pincushions in the garden now and am looking forwarding to adding a creamy white and latte colored variety. These make great “movement” flowers in arrangements.

I was born and raised as a farm girl in the Midwest and have spent the past 20 years living in Australia, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest working as a marine mammal biologist. I love spending time with family, gardening, being outside, and I enjoy making delicious meals for my friends and family. My beloved mama, Kelly passed away in late 2020 and this website is dedicated to her - she taught me to be a grateful heart and see the beauty that surrounds me in all that I do.
