October Bountiful Garden Harvest: 2022

As my Dad and brothers harvest the Iowa sweet corn and soybeans I am harvesting my own crop here on the island in our garden. This year I experimented with my very first cut flower garden (4 out of 6 beds) and then planted strawberries, raspberries, and tomatoes (2 out of 6 beds). I had some serious competition with the snails and slugs and lost quite a few crops to them but it was still a bountiful harvest.

The cut flower garden is still producing beautiful blooms – here are some photos showing the flowers that are currently in the garden. I had to completely replant the garden in early June due to the wettest spring on record so I lost track of where I planted each variety, hence the question marks on one of the photos below!

I was able to successfully sow tomato plants from seed this year and they are currently ripening on the vine. Once they are ready to harvest I plan to use them in my Israeli Couscous salad recipe.

The apple tree has quite a few apples on it which won’t be ready to harvest until the end of the month but once they are my husband is looking forward to my apple butter.

I am wishing you and yours a peaceful and bountiful Fall season and I look forward to sharing more of my journey in the garden with you in 2023!

I was born and raised as a farm girl in the Midwest and have spent the past 20 years living in Australia, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest working as a marine mammal biologist. I love spending time with family, gardening, being outside, and I enjoy making delicious meals for my friends and family. My beloved mama, Kelly passed away in late 2020 and this website is dedicated to her - she taught me to be a grateful heart and see the beauty that surrounds me in all that I do.
