Learning How to Make Sourdough Bread
In March of 2024 I went to a workshop with a close friend to learn how to make sourdough bread. I knew nothing about the process involved or how enthusiastic I would become about making hot, fresh, delicious bread at home. In the past I just wasn’t patient enough to embark on a journey of waiting 24+ hours to pull a loaf of bread out of the oven. As I have navigated grief after my Mom’s passing these past 3 1/2 years I have changed in many ways, it turns out I now have enough patience to start making sourdough. What I am craving is simplicity and getting back to…

Overnight oats are such an easy and nutritious way to start your day. When I was caring for my Mom before she passed away I made overnight oats for her every evening, the coconut blueberry recipe I share here was her absolute favorite. I also love to make these when we are out sailing and spending the night on the water – perfect for camping/road trips too! The recipes here make 1 serving each but I also multiply this recipe by 4 when I am making a larger batch for my family for the week. Coconut Blueberry Step One: In a small breakfast bowl or glass jar add the oats,…

How to make Squash Harvest Bread
Have you ever gone into your favorite cafe and seen squash harvest bread on the menu? It seems to be a staple on the cafe menus here in the Pacific Northwest. This is my take on squash harvest bread and I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. This is a large recipe – it makes two full size loaves of bread (or one full size, two minis + ten muffins!) so feel free to cut this recipe in half if you won’t be sharing it with family, friends, or neighbors. Ingredients: Step One: Roast your butternut squash at 350 degrees for 45 minutes in a 9 x…

Topping each cookie with an edible flower is a nice touch that make these sugar cookies extra special. This recipe makes enough frosting for 3 dozen cookies. Ingredients: Step One: Put the butter and cream cheese in a large glass bowl – if it is not room temperature then pop it in the microwave for 45-60 seconds. Using an electric mixer, blend the butter and cream cheese together. Step Two: Add the vanilla, culinary lavender, and 2 cups of the powdered sugar to…
